Open Access Publishing

Before deciding where to publish your article, it is worth considering which journal to choose from the list of journals scored by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and choosing one of the following publication paths.

All publications must be published under an open licence, preferably the Creative Commons Attribution license CC BY 4.0

The journal/platform must be registered in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) or in the process of being registered.

Publishing programmes under Wirtualna Biblioteka Nauki so-called transformative arrangements.

Journals licensed for open access under so-called transformative arrangements must be registered by the Efficiency and Standards for Article Charges (ESAC-registry).

Open Access publishing programmes for AGH University of Krakow

Plan S allows the selection of such a journal, but only until 2024 and under the condition that the article, both in the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM version) and the final version of the publication (Version of Record VoR), must be simultaneously published in an open access repository at the same time as it is published online (with no time embargo). The repository must be registered in the Open Directory of Open Access Repositories  (OpenDOAR).

A helpful tool is the Journal Checker Tool, which allows you to check whether the journal in which you plan to publish complies with NCN's Open Access Policy and Plan S regulations.

The following programmes are designed for correspondence authors affiliated with the AGH University of Krakow

  • The Association for Computing Machinery publishing programme is designed for correspondence authors affiliated with AGH and using institutional e-mail addresses in the agh.edu.pl domain.
  • The programme allows an unlimited number of scientific articles to be published without paying the APC fee in ACM journals, magazines and conference proceedings.
  • The programme can be used until 31 December 2024.

  • The number of articles is not divided into institutions, and articles are included in the programme in the order of their acceptance for publication (note: the Manuscript Acceptance Date sometimes referred to as Revised in articles is the deciding factor, if this date is not specified decides the date of “Published online”).
  • If the author selects OA publication, the system sends the information about the article to ICM, which verifies that the appropriate affiliation is given in the article and confirms the article's inclusion in the programme. There is no charge for AGH.
  • Publication of articles licenced under CC BY.
  • The ASC 2023 programme works on account of the new 2023-2025 agreement. The available pool of the programme in 2023 is 392 articles (updated 08.04.2024).
  • The Elsevier 2022-2024 National Licence covers by Programme A - fee exemption for Open Access publication (Article Processing Charge), but only applies to articles sent and accepted in 2023. Exemption is presented by Elsevier on the Rights and Access form as a 100% discount. 
  • It is intended for correspondence authors affiliated with institutions that are covered by the Elsevier National Licence and have created an administrative account in the Elsevier Open Access Platform (EOAP) - system to verify the affiliation of their authors.
  • Additional fees apply to several journals, e.g. a fee for the number of pages (Page Charges), a fee for acceptance of the manuscript (Submission Fee) or for additional services that may be requested by the author (prints, printed colour drawings, etc.).
  • Articles publish under CC BY, CC BY NC ND licence and from March 2022, under CC BY NC licence. The author can choose the licence at his/her own choice, but it is worth mentioning that a CC BY licence is required under Plan S.
  • Information about an article submitted to the programme is sent by Elsevier to the local administrator at the institution (AGH Research Infrastructure Department), who, verifies that the author is affiliated with the institution
  • The list of journals included in the programme under the national license is limited (list of titles). 
  • Additional journals available under the programme for the AGH University of Krakow (list of titles).
  • The programme reopened in January 2024 for articles submitted to journals in 2024 with a new pool of 1013 articles. 40 articles from the pool of 1013 articles for 2024 have been used (updated 08.04.2024).

  • Funds for publishing are limited.
  • In some journals, the fee for publishing in OA under a consortium agreement covers only the cost of the basic number of pages provided for the selected journal (e.g. 5, 8 or 12 pages of formatted text). The cost of additional pages or services (graphics) is payable by the author. This information is shown on the submission form.
  • Publication of articles under a CC BY licence.
  • The Main Library, as part of the IEEE consortium, plans to purchase another tokens for 2024.
  • Programme designed for correspondence authors affiliated with institutions participating in the IOP consortium.
  • Unlimited number of articles. The number of articles is not divided into institutions, and articles are included in the programme in the order of their acceptance for publication. 
  • Articles eligible for the programme are recognised on the affiliation.
  • Publication of articles under a CC BY licence.
  • Article accepted during the agreement period.
  • The IOP 2023 programme works on the new 2023-2025 contract account. The pool in the programme is unlimited.
  • The programme is a supplement to the journal Science. A separate open-access journal, Science Advances, is designed for open access publishing.
  • The national Science licence fee funded by Ministry of Education covers the cost of publishing up to 10 articles from Poland per year in the journal Science Advances.
  • The publisher identifies such articles itself, based on the affiliation provided by the author. 
  • The 2022-2024 programme works with an annual pool of 10 articles.
  • Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics is a one-of-its-kind partnership of over three thousand libraries, key funding agencies and research centres in 44 countries, regions or territories and three intergovernmental organisations. The SCOAP3 model is based on a lightweight central administration at CERN which arranges payment of Article Processing Charges at a competitive level, through funds made available by the participating institutions.
  • The consortium currently has agreements with publishers for the period 2020-2022 covering 3 APS journals (funded in partial by SCOAP3 and subscriptions), 2 Springer journals, 2 Elsevier journals and 1 journal each from IOP, OUP and Jagiellonian University.
  • Publication without individual fees by authors. The programme continues uninterrupted and without restrictions on the number of articles.
  • The Springer Open Publishing Programme enables authors affiliated with Polish academic institutions to publish open access articles in Springer hybrid journals (list of titles).
  • The agreement is a transformative one in which the majority of the licence fee is for open access publishing and a minority is a fee for access to subscription articles.
  • The programme is designed for correspondence authors affiliated with institutions that are covered by Springer's national licence and have set up an Article Approval Service (AAS) administrative account to verify the affiliation of their authors. Costs are funded by the Ministry of Education.
  • Publication of articles under a CC BY licence.
  • Programme reopened with a pool of 1363 articles for 2024 (updated 08.04.2024).

  • The Trans Tech Publications programme is designed for correspondence authors affiliated with AGH and using institutional e-mail addresses in the agh.edu.pl domain.
  • The programme enables publication of an unlimited number of scientific articles without paying the APC fee in the journals covered by the programme.
  • Articles are published under the CC BY 4.0 licence.
  • The programme can be used until 31 December 2024.


FAQ Open Access Trans Tech Publications

The MDPI Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute is a Swiss Open Access database where articles can be published for a fee or free of charge, depending on the type of journal chosen. Since 1 July 2016, the Main Library has joined the MDPI Institutional Membership Program. Membership allows all AGH staff to benefit from a 10% discount on article publication. To obtain the discount, after adding an article to the database, select Display Submitted Manuscripts and choose AGH University of Krakow from the list of institutions presented.

More about MDPI project

The De Gruyter Institutional Membership Agreement programme allows AGH staff to publish articles in Open Access at a 10% discount in selected journals. The cost of publishing an article in a hybrid journal is EUR 2000. The author can choose the form of publication (standard or Open Access).
